Starting September 18, 2025, we’ve made it easier to share SpotOn with family, friends, and caregivers. Users can now share individual dogs and their active fences with both SpotOn users and non-users. You choose which dogs to share - no need to give access to all of them. Only the original fence creator can delete a fence.

⚠️ Note: Share a Dog is only available for users on app version 1.4.47 or higher.

What is Share a Dog?

The Share a Dog feature lets you give other SpotOn users and non-users access to a specific dog and their active fences - without needing to share your entire account. Whether it’s for co-parenting your pup, letting a friend help with walks, or giving a pet sitter temporary access, this feature makes sharing secure and flexible.

It replaces the old Invite Friends and Family system with a more powerful setup that supports selective sharing of dogs and multiple roles.

Where can I find the Share a Dog feature?

You’ll need the email address of the person you want to share your dog with. They do not need to have an existing SpotOn account. They’ll get a notification and access once they accept.

To share a dog:

  1. Open the SpotOn Fence app.
  2. Tap on Profile from the main menu.
  3. Click on the Share located to the right of My Dogs & Escape Records
  4. Select the dog you want to share.
  5. Tap Continue and follow the prompts.

To access information and escape records for dogs that have been shared with you:

  1. Open the SpotOn Fence app.
  2. Tap on Profile from the main menu.
  3. Scroll to Dogs Shared with Me.

How do I use Share a Dog?

If the dogs that have been shared with you are subscribed to a cellular plan, you will be able to locate them in the Track screen in the SpotOn app:

  1. Open the SpotOn Fence app.
  2. Tap on Track from the main menu.
  3. If you are managing multiple dogs, use the toggle at the top of the screen to navigate to each dog.

SpotOn uses role-based permissions to keep things safe and clear. Depending on the role assigned when sharing a dog, users will have the following permissions:

Owners and Co-owners of dogs on a cellular plan receive all enabled push notifications for that dog.

  • Caretakers receive limited notifications but will not be notified about cellular plan subscription changes or Share a Dog invitation activity.
  • Viewers receive the fewest notifications - all the limitations of Caretakers plus they do not receive battery status and fence activity (activation, deactivation, and deletion) messages.

Users with limited permissions in the legacy Friends and Family system have been automatically assigned the Viewer role under the new Share a Dog system. Users with full permissions in the legacy Friends and Family system have been automatically assigned the Caretaker role under the new Share a Dog system. You can change these roles at any time.
