How to Add a WiFi Network to Your Nova Collar

Modified on Tue, Jul 21 at 3:22 PM

⚠️ Note: Wi-Fi Settings are coming soon. We're rolling out this feature gradually, and it will be available to all users by late July. This feature is available for SpotOn Nova Edition collars only, no subscription required.

Why Add a WiFi Network?

Adding a WiFi network to your SpotOn Nova collar enables automatic, Over The Air (OTA) collar firmware updates to occur while your collar is charging - no phone required. This means you don't have to keep your phone within Bluetooth range during updates, and firmware updates are significantly faster over WiFi than Bluetooth.

Good to know: Adding a WiFi network only affects collar firmware updates. Updates to SpotOn Fence app are still installed through your phone’s app store.

If you choose not to add a WiFi network, you can still update your collar’s firmware via Bluetooth as usual - WiFi is just an easier and faster alternative to keep your collar at peak performance.

How to Add a WiFi Network

1. Open the SpotOn Fence app.

2. Go to the Dogs screen and tap Connect for Collar Settings.

3. Scroll down to WiFi Networks.

4. Tap Add WiFi and follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip! When entering your WiFi password, double-check your capitalization. Upper and lowercase letters are easy to mix up and can cause connection errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

QUICKLINKS

Do I have to add a WiFi network to use my Nova collar

  • No. Adding a WiFi network is optional and only used for automatic collar firmware updates. Your fences will work without WiFi.

Will I still get collar firmware updates if I don’t add a WiFi network?

  • Nova collar owners who do not add a WiFi network can still update their collar firmware via Bluetooth. See  instructions here.

What’s the benefit of WiFi updates vs. Bluetooth updates?

  • WiFi updates are significantly faster and don’t require your phone to stay near the collar during the update. Updates will happen automatically while your collar is on the charger.

My WiFi network isn’t showing up in the app. What should I try?

  • First, make sure your router is broadcasting on a supported frequency band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). The 6 GHz band is not supported. If you’re on 5 GHz and still having trouble, try switching your router to 2.4 GHz and attempt to connect again.

I entered my password correctly but the connection is failing. What should I check?

  • Double check for any uppercase/lowercase mismatches in your password. Also confirm that your router is using one of the supported security types listed above.

Does adding WiFi affect my collar’s battery life?

  • WiFi is only used while the collar is charging, when a firmware update is available, so it does not impact your collar’s battery life.

Will SpotOn be able to see my WiFi password or use it to see my browsing history?

  • No, your password data is protected and hashed so no one from the SpotOn team can see it or use it.
